Love in the Big Apple
Engaged and interested in a New York City engagement session? The city is filled with options, activities, and backdrops for couples in love. Here are some of my favorites.
1. Central Park - Bethesda Terrace & Bow Bridge
Nestled within Central Park, Bethesda Terrace holds classic elegance with its grand architecture and scenic variety. The terrace overlooks the iconic Bethesda Fountain, offering a stunning backdrop for intimate moments captured in the golden glow of the sun. Nearby Bow Bridge, framed by lush foliage and with the city skyline in the distance, is another fantastic spot for beautiful portraits. Other areas to explore: The Mall and Literary Walk, the Naumberg Bandshell, various Central Park bridges, and perhaps a boat ride on The Lake.
2. Central Park's Conservatory Garden
A bit further north, step into a botanical paradise at Central Park's Conservatory Garden, where manicured lawns and vibrant blooms create a dreamy setting for your engagement session. From rose-filled archways to enchanting fountains, every corner of this garden is gorgeous a backdrop.
3. Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters
Escape the city's hustle and bustle with a visit to Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Hudson River, this medieval-inspired setting boasts scenic vistas and classic architecture that transport you to another era. The somewhat hidden Billings Arcade, the original driveway and portico of the CKG Billings Estate, is a must visit during your session.
4. Brooklyn Bridge Park and DUMBO
With the iconic Manhattan skyline as your backdrop, DUMBO's cobblestone streets and waterfront views offer a variety of scenes to work with. Capture your love against the backdrop of the majestic Brooklyn Bridge or Manhattan Bridge, or explore some interior streets with great murals.
5. Grand Central Terminal
Step into the heart of Manhattan's iconic transportation hub, Grand Central Terminal, where timeless images meet the pulse of the city. Beneath the celestial ceiling of the Main Concourse, steal a moment amidst the rush of commuters and the soft glow of the terminal's golden light. The nearby New York Public Library and Bryant Park are great additional locations to utilize for your session.
6. The High Line
Elevate your engagement photoshoot atop The High Line, a unique urban park built on a historic freight rail line. Stroll hand in hand along verdant pathways, adorned with art installations and city views, creating a modern yet romantic ambiance for your photos. Additional nearby areas include: Tribeca, Little Island, and Hudson Yards.
7. Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Immerse yourselves in the vibrant energy of Williamsburg and add some activities on top of it. From colorful street art to trendy cafes and industrial backdrops, this eclectic neighborhood offers endless possibilities for capturing your unique love story. With Sara and Brian, I met them at one of their favorite music venues, Music Hall of Williamsburg, captured them on City bikes and at their favorite candy store, Bon Bon, and photographed them on the vibrant streets and nearby waterfront.
8. Tribeca
Known for its cobblestone streets and historic architecture, Tribeca exudes a timeless charm perfect for engagement photography. Explore hidden alleyways and stylish facades, capturing candid moments that reflect the fun and romance of your relationship. The Staple Street Skybridge is an iconic spot to add in, and The Highline is a great option to utilize too.
9. The Upper West Side
Discover the Upper West Side's timeless allure with its tree-lined streets and historic brownstones. This iconic neighborhood offers a variety of picturesque settings for capturing your love in the heart of the city and a walk into Central Park adds fantastic foliage and greenery to balance the city shots. (The Upper East Side works great as well and I frequently photograph sessions in the neighborhood's where my couples live!)
10. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Make your engagement session a work of art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. With its grand facade and world-class galleries, this cultural landmark provides an artful and iconic backdrop for classic New York City engagement images.
